Japanese Lacquer Zushi Buddha Shrine - Meiji Period Period - 18th Century This western Zhou dynasty styleJapanese box shrines (zushi) became common place when Buddhism spread across Japan in the 8th century. As Buddhist temples were built in the place of Shint shrines, these miniature shrines for private devotion became more common. The interior is gilded apart from the Buddha which has been replaced at some time.
